How to solve Puzzle 006?

For this puzzle, you will need to identify which out of 8 identical-looking weights is lighter than the others by only using a scale twice.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 006 - Light Weight Description

Here we have eight small weights that all look the same. However, one of the weights in the group is slightly lighter than the rest.

Using the scales two times, you can find out which of these weights is lighter than the rest.

So, which weight is the light one?

This puzzle resets each time you try it, so you can’t try each weight one after the other until you get it as you’ll be against ⅛ odds each time.

There is a strategic approach to this puzzle that guarantees the correct answer each time, however.

Your first test will need to eliminate your choices from ⅛ down to either a ⅓ choice or 50/50 if you’re lucky.

Begin by weighing two groups of 3 weights…

What are the hints for Puzzle 006?

Hint 1

Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 006 - Light Weight Hint 1

You’re not weighing two sets of four weights on your first use of the scale, are you?

If you do that, you’ll only have one more chance left to determine which of the four weights is the light one.

But you probably already know that, right?

Hint 2

Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 006 - Light Weight Hint 2

Maybe thinking about another example will help you out here. Imagine you have three weights, of which is lighter than the rest.

To find the light weight, all you have to do is weigh any two of the three. If one of the weights on the scale is lighter, there’s your answer. If the two weights on the scale are equal, the remaining weight is the light one.

Hint 3

Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 006 - Light Weight Hint 3

Think about the previous hint. You can work out the light weight in a group of three with one use of the scale.

If you can narrow the number of weights in question to three in one use of the scale, you’ve got your answer.

Puzzle 006 Answer

There is no set answer to the puzzle, as the answer changes with each attempt. Instead, you need to work methodically until you have a single weight left.

For you’re first use of the scale, weigh any two sets of 3 weights (e.g. 1, 2, and 3 on the left side and 4, 5, and 6 on the right side).

If the scale tips, the side higher up will have the lighter weight, If the scale doesn’t tip then one of the two remaining weights will be the lighter one.

If the scale tipped in the first attempt, place one weight on the left, and another on the right. Leave the remaining weight off the scale in a separate space from the other 5.

With your second attempt, if the scale tips, the higher side of the scale is your lighter weight. If the scale doesn’t tip, then the remaining weight on the sidelines is the lighter one.

If the scale remained level during your first attempt, place the remaining two weights on either side of the scale. Whichever is higher is the lighter weight.

The key is to start off strong with the first attempt.

If you weigh 4 against 4, you’ll end up needing to make a guess in the end.

By only weighing 6 for your first use, you’re potentially eliminating 6 weights instead of 4 if you’re lucky, but eliminating 5 at the least.

This leaves you only needing to weigh 1 against 1 in your second use, and guaranteeing you a correct answer.
