Storyteller Review

What is Storyteller?

The Storyteller game is a puzzle game, where you place scenes and characters in a specific order to tell stories.

The answers aren’t always straightforward, as you can often find yourself telling completely differently tales that those you’ve been tasked to create.

Is Storyteller good?

Storyteller is a fun little hidden gem that anyone with a passing interest in puzzle games should play!

The game is simply in design and easy for almost anyone to play; it’s especially fun to play with others to enjoy some of the wacky stories you’ll create.

Storyteller steers hard into the storybook aesthetic and nails it completely. The developers have clearly put a lot of thought and attention into every possible combination you can think of.

Characters will respond to every scene they’re placed in, and to every character they’re placed with.

A lot of the time it’s fun to spend time messing around to see how each character will interact with everything.

I think that Storyteller is very well structured with its puzzle design, and demonstrates thoughtful crafting.

The game begins easy, allowing you time to get to grips with how they game works and how the developers want you to consider each puzzle. Each new chapter gradually upping the difficulty and level of thought you need to put in.

Storyteller is a fairly short game. Originally, the when the game first launched, it didn’t offer much beyond the standard levels. Only Steam players had a little bit more to strive for with the Achievements.

However, in September 2023, the developers released the First Major Update.

This not only reshuffled and redesigned some puzzles, but it also added in Devil Levels and a Stamp system.

Both of these added a new layer to the game, practically doubling its longevity.

Both are designed to encourage you to reconsider how you’d told stories throughout the game, and make you use your puzzle pieces in new an unique ways.

I greatly appreciate the addition of both of these elements. However, I’m not quite happy with how the Stamp system works.

The Stamps are in-built Achievements, utilizing the ones originally used for Steam.

The issue I have with these is that you have to complete all the main puzzles in order to unlock the ability to earn them.

Instead of potentially working towards earning them on your playthrough, it feels as though the developers were artificially lengthening the game to compensate for its shortness.

I feel that this system would be better if the Stamps could be unlocked as you played through the game. There would be a lot of fun in fumbling your way through a difficult puzzle only to accidentally earn yourself a Stamp.

Ultimately, I do definitely think that Storyteller is a very fun game with a unique approach to the puzzle genre.

I loved my time with the game – enough to fully complete it and write a guide for it on Square Eyes Gaming.

I do think the game could do a few more levels, or optional challenges to really sell itself and make this game a must-have. However, especially after its major update, I can easily recommend this game to anyone looking for a short and sweet, but challenging puzzle game.

How long is Storyteller?

Storyteller is a relatively short game, offering around 70 main levels to solve. If you’re quite the lateral thinker, you may finish Storyteller in around 3-4 hours.

If you’re a completionist, Storyteller offers an internal achievement system with 31 additional challenges to solve. These can easily add another 2-3 hours to your game time.

Where can I play the Storyteller game?

Storyteller is available for digital purchase on Steam and the Nintendo Switch for around the $15 range.

Alternatively, if you have an active Netflix account, you’re able to download and play Storyteller at no additional cost on either a compatible phone or tablet.

Storyteller Rating

Storyteller is a fun and sometimes challenging game. The developers seem keen on expanding and improving the experience players too, so it’s definitely worth giving a go.
