Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 039 - One-line Puzzle 2 Description

The idea of one-line puzzles is to place your pen to paper and draw a shape without lifting your pen from the paper or retracing any part of the line. You can, however, cross lines.

Now that you’re familiar with the concept, look at the four pictures below. One of them cannot be drawn with one line.

Which one is it?

Understanding how one-line puzzles work is extremely helpful for solving puzzles like this (obviously!)

Look at the intersections.

When there are an even number of lines coming from it, you can conclude that if you enter that intersection, you’ll be able to come out of it again.

But what happens when you have intersections with an odd number of lines, what does that tell you must happen at these points?

What are the hints for Puzzle 039?

Hint 1

Professor Layton and the Curious Village puzzle 039 - One-line Puzzle 2 Hint 1

Each picture should be composed of lines that meet at different points.

With these pictures, if you find a single line that runs beyond the others, you know you have to start your drawing there.

Try tracing the answer out yourself.

Hint 2

Some points may be the convergence point for several lines. You need to think hard about which line to take in and out of the point in order to make the sketches work.

If your pen is entering a point formed by an even number of lines, you will always be able to leave the point via another line.

Hint 3

Using Hints One and Two, it’s actually quite easy to draw these shapes out yourself.

Make sure that you start drawing the shape from a point that touches an odd number of lines. Don’t forget, one is also an odd number.

Puzzle 039 Answer

The only shape that cannot be drawn in a single line is the Top Hat.

It’s the band above the brim that makes this impossible.

There are far too many intersections with three lines. You can only have two of these per drawing: one to start the drawing and the other to end it.
